The US State Department had released a statement regarding the outbreak of violence in Manipur last year that there were human rights violations in Manipur. India reacted strongly to the report, calling the statement biased. The US report highlights a lack of understanding.

What is in the US report?
A recently released report on human rights practices 2023 cited ethnic conflict between Maithai and Kuki communities in Manipur, India as a cause of human rights violations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had condemned the Manipur incident as a disgrace. He called for action on the case.

The US State Department’s annual human rights assessment report has claimed that media critical of the Indian government are harassing them. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took a dig at the criticism against India.
