New Delhi: The Taliban have announced that the women in Afghanistan will be stoned to death for adultery, according to a report.
Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada made the announcement – that he is resuming the public stoning of women to death – in a voice message broadcast on state television last Saturday, the Telegraph reported.
In a video accessed by the Telegraph, Akhundzada said the women’s rights the international community had been advocating for were against the Taliban’s interpretation of Islamic Sharia.
“You say it’s against women’s rights when we stone them to death. But we will implement the punishment for adultery soon. We will flog women in public. We will stone them to death in public,” he said.
“The Taliban’s work did not end with the occupation of Kabul, it has only just begun,” Akhundzada added.
Afghan women have faced many challenges since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Girls and women in the war-torn country lack access to education, employment and public spaces.
Just a month after returning to power, the Taliban authorities banned girls from attending secondary school, before closing the university doors to them in December 2022 and then severely limiting their participation in the workforce.
Conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are the “world’s worst,” a UN report said, saying the Taliban government’s policies – based on their strict interpretation of Islam – could amount to “apartheid sex.”
For many families, the only way forward for their daughters is marriage, “regardless of their consent,” the AFP quoted a young student as saying.
“Depression is common. The suicide rate among women has risen a lot in the last two years. It’s tragic,” he told the news agency.
