Islamabad: The Central Power Purchase Agency (CPPA) has proposed the federal government to tax people using solar panels for residential or commercial purposes, ARY News reported.

The sources present in the development said that the CPPA has proposed a tax of Rs 2,000 per kilowatt on residential and commercial consumers installing 12 kilowatts or more.

The Authority’s recommendation, which was sent to the Ministry of Energy (Electricity Division) for approval, has now been forwarded to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for final approval.

After the Prime Minister’s approval, the consumers who install 12 KW solar panels will have to pay a tax of Rs 24,000.

Meanwhile, the federal government is also looking at solar panel prices as a proposal to make solar panels cheaper is under consideration.

Earlier on Friday, Sindh Prisons Minister Ali Hassan Zardari said that prisons across the province would be transferred to solar energy.

According to the details, 200 to 600KV solar arrays will be installed in jails across the district to convert ventilators installed in barracks to solar technology.

Zardari said the work to convert Karachi Central Jail, Women’s Jail and Landhi Jail on solar energy has already started, while in the second phase the jails of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Gutki, Jacobabad, Sukkur will be converted to the technology. Solar.
