Be it the Urban Local Body, Panchayat, Assembly or Lok Sabha elections, the voters are keen to elect their leaders who will help them develop their area and improve their living conditions. The power to vote for your country is an important part of democracy. While many in our country are entitled to vote, very few are enthusiastic about it. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the voter turnout was 67.11% which is the highest voter turnout in history. In each election there was a positive increase in the percentage of votes. But as much as the voters are excited about electing the leaders, do the leaders care about the voters? In every election many promises are made regardless of the political party that supports politics. Guwahati has many lanes, roads not yet built, water supply projects not yet completed. Many drainage systems have not yet been built and these promises are fulfilled in every election. The political leaders visit every ward, village and region to woo the voters before the elections. After coming to power, those voters have to run column to column to meet the elected leaders. Meeting the Councillor, Panchayat or Zila Prashad members is not that challenging, but meeting the Legislative Assembly Member or the Member of Parliament is like meeting God.

Voters will continue to vote in every election with the same enthusiasm. The voter’s dilemma needs to be understood by the elected leaders.
