GUWAHATI: Mystery surrounds the death of an elephant deployed for tourist safari inside Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

According to reports, ‘Lakimala’ died on the night between April 22 and 23.

The tusker, a beloved presence at the Baguri Range Safari, succumbed to unexplained circumstances, raising concerns among park visitors and wildlife enthusiasts.

According to her mahout, ‘Lakhimala’ has been ill for a long time, experiencing difficulties in eating and drinking.

However, allegations have surfaced suggesting a potential cover-up by the elephant’s owner and park authorities regarding the circumstances leading to its death following an alleged attempt to truck the carcass out of the park overnight.

Grieving local residents presented floral tributes and ‘gamusa’ to commemorate ‘Lakimala’s memory’.

An investigation is underway to find out the circumstances that led to the elephant’s death.
