Doctors do not agree on the treatment of the lungs that bear the burden of air pollution and cancer. Its treatment is also not the same. That’s why it takes a scary shape. The government has now taken a tough stand and decided to prepare guidelines based on scientific facts.
The government entrusted this responsibility to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which formed 15 teams by selecting 100 expert doctors from the country. These teams will collect scientific evidence on tobacco smoking, air pollution, low-dose computed tomography, mammography, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation, as well as surgery. According to the Union Health Ministry, lung cancer accounts for 5.9% of all cancers in India. Apart from that, it also accounts for 8.1% of cancer deaths every year. According to the World Report 2021 published in The Lancet medical journal, the age-adjusted incidence rate (ASIR) of lung cancer in India has increased from 6.62 lakh in 1990 to 7.7 in 2019.
That is why national guidelines are needed
A senior ICMR official said that currently there is no guideline at the national level in Israel regarding the treatment of lung cancer. If a patient receives treatment from a doctor in Delhi, his practices may differ from that of a doctor treating him in Karnataka or Tamil Nadu. It has both advantages and disadvantages. That is why guidelines are needed at the national level.
