The vaccine has saved the lives of about 154 million people worldwide in 50 years. That means every minute was a success in saving the lives of six people. Most of the lives saved were babies, about 101 million.
According to research led by the World Health Organization, vaccination is important for health as it ensures that children not only celebrate their first birthday but also live a healthy life as adults. The results of the study were published in ‘The Lancet’.
Vaccines have shown an effect against 14 diseases
The vaccine has directly contributed to the reduction of infant mortality worldwide. These vaccines have shown efficacy against 14 major diseases including diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae B, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, measles, meningitis A, pertussis, invasive pneumococcal disease, polio, rotavirus, rubella, tetanus, tuberculosis and yellow fever.
