Due to climate change, the ice in Antarctica is melting rapidly, due to which about 5,000 meteorites are buried in the depths of the ice every year. Researchers revealed this in the latest study. Scientists believe that there are many mysteries ranging from the origin of life on Earth to the formation of the moon, the answers to which can be found from these meteorites.
Researchers said that Antarctica is no less than a mysterious world, it is a continent covered by a white sheet of ice. It contains countless mysteries, one of these mysteries is the meteorites found here, which are deposited in countless numbers on the surface of Antarctica. This study by researchers from Belgium, Switzerland and the UK was published in Nature Climate Change.
More than eight lakh meteorites are on the surface
The study found that their numbers are decreasing five times faster than the rate at which meteorites are collected from Antarctica. On average, 1,000 meteorites were collected from there every year. About 80,000 meteorites have so far been discovered on Earth, of which 60 percent were found on the surface of Antarctica. Scientists estimate that 3 to 8.50 lakh meteorites have yet to be collected here.
