During an election, the rules are usually stricter in each polling constituency.

But, Emek Barak is different because the area seems to lack basic knowledge of road safety rules. In addition to this, it seems that even the enforcement authorities are not active in focusing on the issues.

On April 22, an incident took place on the Silchar-Imphal National Highway, specifically in the Lalang area of Cachar, which fell under the jurisdiction of the Lachipur Police Station.

Around 10:30 in the morning, a passenger patrol collided with a motorcycle.

The cruiser was on its way to Silvar from Fullertal when the unfortunate incident occurred.

According to reports, the collision propelled the motorcycle as well as its rider under the cruiser.

According to eyewitness statements, the cruiser reportedly dragged the motorcycle along the road for several meters before finally stopping.

On March 18, eleven people, including the driver, were injured when the four-wheeler they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck on the Silchar-Aizawl highway (NH-306) in Narsingpur area under Sunai police station in Cachar district. in Assam.

Similar incidents continue to be published from around the Barak Valley quite often.

Barak Valley has two Lok Sabha constituencies – Silchar and Karimganj. The GPlus team visited both constituencies to understand the road safety situation.

At Rangirkhari point in Silchar town, the GPlus team saw the two-wheelers going around for twenty minutes standing near a traffic police on April 22 around 5 pm.

About 80 two-wheelers were seen in which none of the pillion riders were wearing helmets, while some riders were also not wearing helmets. It is interesting to note that they were not fined by the police.

The similar situation exists in Karimganj too, but there are some spots in Karimgamganj, where riders avoid crossing without helmets, as the police will fine them.
From Silchar to Hailakandi to Ramkrishna Nagar to Karimganj, the GPlus team noticed that people are not using seat belts in cars too.

A rider from Dholoi Bazar who was not wearing a helmet, when asked, said: “It’s too hot and I have high blood pressure. I can’t wear a helmet.” He added that the police would hardly collect fines for not wearing helmets, and if so it would be a rare case.

The drivers of the four are not wearing seat belts and when asked they say they have stomach problems.

In Badarpur Ghaat under Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency, enforcement agencies were seen cracking down on seat belt violation and helmet less riders.

It should be mentioned that the state’s transport minister, Parimal Sokalbaidia, is the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Silchar.

In December 2023, Sokalbaidia conducted a bicycle rally covering all 126 assembly areas in the country and distributing road safety rules messages.

It is ironic that in his constituency Silchar road safety rules are hardly followed.

GPlus tried to contact the senior officials of the Silchar district administration on the issue, but they were too busy and said they would discuss the issue after the elections are over.

A senior police official in Silchar said that normally they enforce the rules, but currently due to elections they have less manpower.

Expressing concern over the high number of road fatalities in the state, Assam Transport Minister Parimal Sokalbaidia said 85% of these accidents could have been prevented if people had followed safety rules.

Participating in the ‘Nativ Suraksha Jan Andola’ held in Dibrugarh in December 2023, Suklabaidia drew attention to the fact that Assam recorded 6,001 road accidents between January and October 2023, resulting in 2,606 deaths and 4,800 injuries.
