Members of the public called fire control and also tried to extinguish the fire in Arlington.
The truck, on Scarborough Road, was carrying a load of potatoes. The fire that hit the wheel detached from the vehicle and also caused fire damage to the air suspension tank and axle.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Members of the public used dry powder extinguishers prior to the arrival of the fire services.
“Crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and advice was given to the owner of the HGV. The cause of the fire is believed to be overheated bearings.”
