Pregnant women infected with dengue have a higher risk of giving birth to weak babies. After birth, babies may need to stay in hospitals for a long time. This risk is expected to last from birth to three years of age. This effect of mosquito-borne diseases was revealed in a medical study conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham on Brazilian patients. Researchers chose Brazil for this study because many tropical diseases spread by mosquitoes are common here. These include malaria, dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever.

Danger can be avoided with awareness

And Associate Professor Martin Forks Koffensteiner says ongoing health problems due to hospitalization and maternal contamination can be prevented with better awareness and policies. There is also a high possibility of the spread of dengue infection increasing due to climate change. In such a situation, all countries should change their policies and act against mosquitoes at the grass root level.

Long-term effects may be visible

Livia Menezes, a professor at the University of Birmingham, says dengue can have long-term effects in babies born to pregnant women. Studies so far show that a child’s low birth weight can have a negative effect on his maturity. Such babies were found to have a 27% risk of hospitalization over three years. The researchers found that the risk of babies born to infected women and low birth weight increased by 67 and 133 percent, respectively.
