Police investigating after alleged altercation in Saint John, NB: Police – New Brunswick Achi-News

The New Brunswick police watchdog is investigating an altercation between a St. John police officer and a man who was arrested.

In a release from the St. John Police Department, the force says officers responded to a call about an intoxicated man allegedly causing a disturbance along Portland’s 100th Street around 10:55 p.m. Saturday.

The statement states that the man was arrested without incident, but later an alleged confrontation occurred between the man and the arresting officers while he was being placed in a holding cell.

According to police, the man suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to St. John Regional Hospital where he was treated and later released.

“The St. John’s Police Department takes incidents involving the use of force seriously and we continue to hold our members to the highest standard of accountability in this regard,” said St. John’s Police Chief Robert M. Bruce in the message.

The officers involved in the incident will remain on active duty, the statement said, until the results of the investigation.
