Ancestors Rise: Look at this, India’s oldest Shivlinga, Sahasralinga found in one place! Achi-News

VIJAYAWADA: 1,000 Shiva lingams dating back to the fourth century carved on a giant Shivalinga statue made of limestone have been found in the vicinity of the Kapoteshwara temple at Chejarla village in Palnadu district. She is said to be India’s oldest Sahasralinga (Rising Ancestors). It provides information about the rule of the Anandagotris of Chejarla known as Kandarapura.

Archaeologist Dr E Sivanagireddy claims that the seventh century Sahasralinga housed in the Parashurameshwar temple in Bhubaneswar, Odisha is the oldest in the country by art historians.

A limestone Sahasralinga sculpture carved atop a six-foot Shivalinga can also be seen here. The Times of India reported that Sivanagireddy, an archaeologist and CEO of the Pleach Institute of India, recently visited the site as part of his research on Sahasralingams in the Telugu states.

Special Ekottara Sahasralinga
1,000 small Shivlingas are carved in 25 steps. There are a total of 1,001 carved lingams with 40 lingams carved on each level. The most important of these is called Ekottara Sahasralinga. These are believed to be the oldest sahasralinga found in India and the authorities have been asked to preserve them.
