Nicotine gums, which were openly sold in the market, will no longer be available without a doctor’s prescription. In view of the fear of its misuse among the people, the Technical Advisory Council for Medicines of the central government recommended that the rules be amended and its open sale prohibited.
This decision of the board came after four meetings in a year in which the report of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) based in New Delhi was cited. The report states that nicotine gums or pills are effective, but their availability without a prescription may also increase abuse among smokers and non-smokers. In fact , nicotine in tobacco is an intoxicant. Some health experts see it as a better option to get rid of tobacco addiction and the number of people who consume tobacco in India is also in millions, while some oppose its open sale.
A decision made on scientific facts
Before taking the final decision, on May 10 last year, the council asked ICMR to respond based on scientific facts, after which ICMR prepared a report on August 11 after examining and citing various medical studies.
A QR code will be in the vaccine and medication leaflets
Besides nicotine, the Technical Advisory Committee on Medicines has also made recommendations regarding QR codes on drug leaflets. The board said it is mandatory to have a QR code on all vaccine products. They should have a special type of unique code on the basis of which information about the vaccine can be obtained. Currently, QR codes are installed in about 300 brands in the pharmaceutical market in the country, for which the states were asked to be tested.
