Thailand extends visa exemption period:
Thailand, a popular tourist destination among Indians, has announced that its visa waiver program for visitors from India and Taiwan will be extended for another six months.
Under the program, Indian tourists will be allowed to visit the country without the need for a visa until November 11, 2024, according to a Bloomberg report.
The decision to expand the program was taken in an effort to boost Thailand’s tourism industry, which contributes greatly to the country’s economy, and many reports indicated that the move is expected to attract more foreign tourists to the country. Thai.
Prime Minister Shreta Thavisin announced the extension after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, allowing travelers from India and Taiwan to stay for a maximum of 30 days without a visa.
Earlier, tourists from India and Taiwan were allowed to stay in Thailand for only 15 days under the visa on arrival scheme.
Recently, the Sri Lankan government has announced that Indian tourists will continue to get free tourist visas.
The decision comes in the wake of controversy over charging fees for visas that are processed by a foreign company. Citizens of China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia have also been declared exempt.
A statement issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office on Monday said: “It was decided today to maintain the current fee of USD 50 for a 30-day visa for foreigners visiting the country and to maintain a free visa service for citizens of the seven current country. .
The countries covered by the free visa service are India, China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, the statement said.
The government’s decision to retain the current visa fees and free visa service has drawn much criticism, while the new visa-on-arrival system is currently being operated by a domestic company at Bandaranaike International Airport.
