New Delhi (A.18): There are often negative reports against Maggi manufacturing company Nestlé. This time, a surprising fact has come to light regarding the company’s famous baby food product, Cerelac. The report said that the company sells quality products in European countries, but sells inferior products in developing countries like India. That too, is playing with your children’s lives with such important products.

Global organizations such as the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) and Public Eye released the report after carrying out laboratory tests on Nestlé baby food products, Cerelac and Nido milk products. The company is said to be adding more sugar to products sold in India, Latin America and African countries. The report claimed that the company was playing with children’s health by adopting a two-pronged approach.

Why the company’s dual approach?

Public Eye and IBFAN sent 150 of the company’s products to investigate. Products such as Cerelac for newborns contain 4 grams of sugar per teaspoon, which is said to be the equivalent of one sugar cube. In a product sold in the Philippines, one serving of Cerelac for a 6-month-old baby contains 7.5 grams of sugar.

What standard in his country?

Nestlé’s duality in Switzerland and other major markets in Europe, where the company sells the same product without added sugar, is its global standard. Clearly, in the eyes of the company, children from India, Africa and Latin American countries are not as valuable as children from European countries.

What is the harm caused by this?

Pediatricians and nutritionists say Nestlé’s dual approach is not only against health but also against marketing ethics. The World Health Organization says that if children are exposed to too many sugary products early on, they could be at risk of obesity and other serious diseases. United Nations agencies have banned added sugar in children’s products from 2022.

How big is the company’s market?

Nestlé controls 20 percent of the world’s baby food market and has a turnover of $ 70 billion (about Rs 6 lakh crore). The company has global sales of Cerelac and Nido products worth $2.5 billion in 2022 alone. The company’s product is well liked even in developing countries, but in a recent report its double standard has come as a big shock to consumers.
