As the curtains come down on the campaign, on April 24, for the second phase of polls covering five Lok Sabha constituencies, on April 26, the Muslim electorate is at center stage as they are expected to play a decisive role in at least three constituencies. goddess.

The five constituencies that will go to polls on April 26 are Karimganj, Silchar, Nagaon, Drang-Udalguri and Dipo. Nagaon, Silchar and Karimganj are the three constituencies where the Muslim vote is important. Since the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is an important issue and many Muslims do not support it, the BJP candidates had to change their strategy to woo the Muslim voters.

BJP’s Silchar candidate Parimal Sokalbaidia speaking to GPlus said, “CAA is not an issue in Silchar as people know the benefit and Muslims will vote for development.”

Kripanth Malla candidate Kripanth Malach, BJP candidate of Karimganj talking to GPlus said, “Muslim voters will vote for development and CAA is not a problem. They know BJP will come to power and development will continue.”

All other BJP campaign leaders in the state have changed their tone and claim that Muslims have benefited greatly from the BJP’s machinations.

Nagaon seat is held by the Congress while the other constituencies are under the BJP. With the exception of Dipo, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, the others have large Bengali-speaking Muslim populations.

Bengali Hindus also have a large number of voters in Silchar and Karimganj seats. While Karimganj leads with more than 55.7% Muslim voters, Silchar has less than 40%, Nagaon 58% and Drang-Udalguri about 40%. Several Muslim-majority assembly segments, which were part of the former Kalibur (now Kaziranga) parliamentary seat, were added to the Nagaon seat following last year’s delimitation exercise, thereby significantly increasing its Muslim voters.

The AIUDF, seen as a pro-Muslim party, fielded candidates in Nagaon and Karimganj. The Congress candidates in Nagaon and Karimganj are prominent figures, but many of their votes may go to the AIUDF.

Congress chief spokesperson Mehdi Alam Bora speaking to GPlus said, “Congress will win in Nagaon and Karimganj because Muslim voters do not trust AIUDF and there is anti-incumbency against AIUDF.”

"We will win all three seats. We gave Congress the other 11 seats, but they (Congress) gave over all 11 seats to BJP. They said we are BJP’s B team, but Assam Congress is BJP’s AZ team," The media quoted AIUDF chief Badrudin Ajmal as saying.

The AIUDF manifesto also addressed economic and social issues faced by religious minorities and Bengali-speaking residents of Assam.

She proposed creating a citizen registry based on the March 25, 1971 cutoff to address the issue of illegal aliens.

The party pledged to solve the "d" voter problem, conducting surveys in the river areas to establish income villages, and implementing measures to fight floods and erosion in the country.

The position of the BJP leaders is very clear during election rallies. Referring to the rallies in the Muslim areas, the leaders stated that their government programs do not discriminate and people from minority communities are the main beneficiaries of the welfare measures.

The BJP understands that the Muslim vote is important, and all this talk of ‘Amar lungi vote na laage’ is just a lot of hot air.
