The fall of the Muijju government in the Maldives is only a matter of time? No, it cannot be said at this time. However, the Maldivian Democratic Party, the majority opposition party in parliament, has already impeached Muijju. They claim, ‘We have the numbers to throw the government away’.

The debate began with the approval of four members of Muijju’s cabinet. The opposition has folded. Not only that, they also brought an impeachment against Muijju. The Muijju government is under a lot of pressure in this incident. Incidentally, Muijju was sworn in as the President in November last year. Since then, his government has been involved in many controversies.

The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and the Parliamentary Group of Democrats decided to withhold the parliamentary approval of four members of President Muijju’s cabinet. MPs from the opposition Maldives Progressive Party and the National People’s Congress joined to start the protest.

A conflict broke out between the two sides. That video is viral on social media. On Monday, the Maldives parliament approved 19 ministers from Muijju. However, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Islamic Affairs Minister Mohammad Shahim Ali Saeed and Housing Minister Ali Haider canceled the approval. The Minister of Finance, Mohammed Saider, narrowly managed to save the minister’s position.

An MP from MDP told News 18, “Muijju can bribe MPs like last time to save a mattress”. He also claimed that he and his party’s MPs were being harassed.

According to the Maldivian constitution, a motion to dismiss the president must be submitted with the signature of a third of the MPs. The motion needs to be supported by two thirds of MPs. Now a majority opposition party, the Democratic Party of the Maldives, is set to challenge the ruling alliance of the Progressive Party of the Maldives and the People’s National Congress (PPM/PNC).

The ‘Majlis’ of the Maldives Parliament has 87 members. There are currently 80 MPs. 56 MPs from MDP and Democrats have signed the impeachment motion. But it has not been introduced yet. If MPs decide to table the motion, President Mohammed Muijju will have 14 days to respond. On the 14th day, Muijju will be given 1 hour to defend himself in the Maldives Parliament. Then there will be a vote. If 54 MPs vote in favor of impeachment, Muijzu will have to resign as president.
