The Quebec government has given the organization that runs Montreal’s Olympic Stadium up to $40 million to pay for repairs and cleanup after a March 21 fire.

Olympic Park spokesman Cedric Asimini says extensive decontamination work is needed in the stadium tower as smoke has spread throughout the building.

According to him, around nine kilometers of ventilation ducts must be cleaned, as well as offices located in the tower.

Essiminy says the stadium tower and adjacent sports complex, which have been closed since the fire, could reopen in late summer or early fall.

Montreal police said the fire, which started at the base of the stadium’s tower, remains under investigation.

In February, the Quebec government said it would spend about $870 million to replace the stadium’s roof.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published on April 24, 2024.
