Maldah: Ganges erosion is a major problem in Malda. Almost every year during the rainy season, many people here become proletarians due to the erosion of the Ganges. The demand for permanent measures to stop this erosion has been repeatedly raised, but no such solution has yet been made. Officially, no good arrangements are being made so far for the victims of the areas affected by erosion.

Due to continuous erosion for the last 5-6 years, the people of Manikchak, Ratua and Kaliachak-3 blocks of Malda have lost their homes and landed in several banks of Ganga. The homes of around 5,000 residents of the region have been swept away by the Ganges. However, the administration has not yet made any arrangements for their rehabilitation. In this context, the state minister Sabina Yasmin said that the state government is working as much as it can. For the last two years, the central government has stopped distributing all the schemes. The work being done is being done by the state government initiative.

However, this river erosion problem is not recent. Ever since the construction of Farakka barrage, the erosion of the Ganga has started over a large area of Maldah district which is getting more extensive day by day. So far, the erosion has affected about 7 lakh people. Yet, no proper initiatives have been taken by the administration to rehabilitate or prevent erosion. The people of the affected areas have protested many times but there is no answer yet.

Meanwhile, the victims have accused the political parties of making dry promises to stop erosion when the election comes. They complain that everyone promised before the election, but after the election, nothing is done. In this context, Isha Khan Chowdhury, Congress candidate and former Malda South MLA, said that the previous MP had brought a lot of money for the erosion prevention work. But at present, due to separate government in the state and center, it is not working properly. Now the political parties clash during the election season about who will work.

In this situation, the people of Malda have given open letters to the candidates of all the political parties to get rid of the erosion problem. Their demand is that there is no political tension, no matter who wins the election, there should be proper rehabilitation of the victims of erosion affected areas and a permanent settlement to prevent erosion. Ganga Erosion Citizen Action Committee member Moshareful Anwar said that the central and state governments are blaming each other. But we don’t want anything. Our only demand is that permanent work should be done to prevent erosion. Let the government arrange the rehabilitation of the victims. So we are giving an open letter to all the candidates who come to us to seek votes.

Local people complain that government money is being wasted due to unscientific methods of work being done in the areas affected by erosion. They claim that scientific methods should be used to stop erosion permanently. Also, all the affected people in the area who have not yet been rehabilitated should be rehabilitated as soon as possible.
