It has become a headache for the farmers of Punjab province to sell the wheat grown at high cost, due to reduced wheat purchase by the government, the price per maund has come down to Rs.3000 maund in the grain markets.
Wheat harvest has started in Punjab but farmers are forced to sell their crop at a price lower than the price set by the government.
The Punjab government failed to solve the problem, after which Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif took note of the situation and ordered the immediate purchase of wheat from the farmers.
In this regard, the farmers’ leaders say that their crop is being bought at Rs 3100 and 3200 per maund instead of the price set by the government.
According to the Punjab government, 26 thousand tons of imported wheat is already in warehouses, we cannot buy another 4 million tons of wheat, which will cause a loss of 3 to 400 billion rupees.
In this regard, the present Punjab government put all the blame on the caretaker government and said that all these decisions were taken by the previous caretaker government, there is no more room to buy surplus wheat due to wheat imports.
In the context of the current situation, Kisan Ittehad leaders have demanded that the government should ensure procurement of wheat at its fixed support price, otherwise they will hold a sit-in outside the Punjab Assembly on April 29 with this demand and sit-in. Until our demand is fulfilled.
