Employment remains a major issue this time in the Lok Sabha elections. Especially after the report of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which claims that 83% of the unemployed workforce in India are youth. But the analysis of government data received from various sources revealed that during the last years of the Modi government, there has been a significant increase in jobs and a decrease in the unemployment rate.

Data from Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS), Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Career Services (NCS) portal and various employment-focused programs of the central government show growth in jobs and decline in unemployment rate. The last six years of PLFS data indicate an improving trend in the labor force participation rate (LFPR) and the working population ratio (WPR). Its data shows that employment in Israel increased from 46.8 percent in 2017-18 to 56 percent in 2022-23.

The unemployment rate has fallen in six years

Similarly, labor force participation also increased from 49.8 percent in 2017-18 to 57.9 percent in 2022-23. At the same time, in the period of these six years, there was a decrease of about three percent in the unemployment rate and it decreased from 6 percent in 2017-18 to 3.2 percent in 2022-23. According to the data, the labor force participation rate rose 3.1 percent in 2022-2023 from 2.7 percent, indicating more jobs than demand.

The unemployment rate fell more in rural areas

The unemployment rate in rural areas was 5.3 percent in 2017-18, which decreased to 2.4 percent in 2022-2023. At the same time, during this period in urban areas it dropped from 7.7 percent to 5.3 percent.

The youth unemployment rate dropped by 8%

The youth unemployment rate was 17.8 percent in 2017-18, which dropped to 10 percent in 2022-2023. During this period there was also a significant decrease in the unemployment rate among women and it dropped from 5.6 percent in 2017-18 to 2.9 percent in 2022-23.

6.1 million new members joined EPFO

According to EPFO ​​data, 6.1 million new members have joined EPFO ​​during the last six years. The latest KLEMS database released by RBI also shows that within 9 years, the estimated employment in the country has increased from 47 crore in 2013-14 to 55.3 crore in 2021-22. Similarly, the National Career Service (NCS) portal launched by the government to bring companies and workers on one platform has seen a 214 per cent increase in job vacancies in 2023-24 compared to 2022-23.
