Not only this, INS Sumitra, the Indian Navy’s indigenous offshore patrol vessel, yesterday rescued 17 crew members of another Iranian-flagged fishing vessel ‘MV Iman’, which was hijacked by Somali pirates 700 nautical miles west of Kochi in the Arabian Sea.

Indian defense officials said that INS Sumitra arrived there soon after receiving information about the hijacking. The ALH Dhruva Chopper in the warship surrounded the pirates. The Indian Navy seized their weapons. All on board were then rescued safely. The MV Iman has also been decontaminated and released for onward transport.

Within 36 hours, INS Sumitra rescued two fishing vessels, including 17 Iranians and 19 Pakistanis, from pirates in the South Arabian Sea, about 850 nautical miles west of Kochi. The statement issued by the Ministry of Defense said, ‘The Indian Navy is committed to combating all maritime threats in the region. Our job is to ensure the safety of every seafarer and ship at sea’.
