Huge family with 350 voters to vote in Sunitpur LS polls Achi-News

GUWAHATI: During the initial phase of elections for the April 19 Lok Sabha elections, the family of late Ron Bahadur Thapa, who lives in Phuloguri Nepali Paam in Assam’s Sonitpur district, stands out as one of the largest participating families in Assam.

According to reports, under the jurisdiction of Rangpara constituency and Sonitpur parliamentary segment, all the members of this extended family are scheduled to exercise their voting rights in the Sonitpur Lok Sabha constituency on the above date.

Ron Bahadur Thapa, who left behind 12 sons and 9 daughters upon his demise, had an extraordinary family of nearly 1200 members, with around 350 members eligible to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, according to reports. In addition, his legacy includes more than 150 grandchildren. Notably, Phuloguri Nepali Paam area in Sonitpur Parliamentary Constituency is home to around 300 families who trace their lineage to the same ancestor.

Til Bahadur Thapa, the village chief of the Nepalese village of Pham and one of Ron Bahadur’s sons confirmed that about 350 people in their extended family have the right to vote.

"My father came here together with my grandfather in 1964 and settled in the country. My father had five wives and we have 12 brothers and 9 sisters. He had 56 grandchildren from his sons. I don’t know the grandchildren from the daughter’s side. In this election, there are close to 350 Thapa family members in the Nepali Pam who are eligible to vote. If we count all the children, then our total family members will be more than 1,200," Til Bahadur Thapa said while talking to the media.

But then he also said that the family has not yet been able to avail the benefits of the welfare schemes of the state and central governments.

"Our children got higher education but did not get any government job. Some of our family members went to Bengaluru and found private jobs. Some of them work as daily wage workers. I have been working as a Pradan village since 1989. I have 8 sons and 3 daughters," Til Bahadur said.

He added that his father raised 12 sons and 9 daughters. Saraki Bahadur Tafa, another son of the late Ron Bahadur, told the media that there are about 1200 family members.

"We have a large family that has about 350 members, who are entitled to vote," Saraki Bahadur Tapa said.

According to family members, Ron Bahadur died in 1997 and left behind his large and fat family.

Saraki Bahadur Thapa, now 64 years old, has three wives and 12 children.

There are more than 16.25 lakh voters in Sonitpur Lok Sabha constituency, which consists of 9 assembly segments.

Elections to the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam will be held in three phases – on April 19, April 26 and May 7.
