Students near McGill University who want to avoid tossing their used lamps, side tables and toasters by the wayside now have a better option.

The City of Montreal launched the Rebut recup program to collect furniture and household goods in the Milton-Park area (McGill Gto).

The program is run by the non-profit SAESEM (Society for Environmental Action, Education and Awareness of Montreal) which implements environmental projects to improve Montreal’s quality of life, according to its website.

“Each year, some of the sidewalks in the Milton Park neighborhood get dirty from the dumping of bulky items when student housing leases expire on May 1,” the program said in a statement. “To avoid throwing reusable items at the curb, RebutRécup offers a home collection service, by appointment. This service diverted about 2.5 tons of material from the landfill last year.”

Those who want to collect goods can register on the Rebut recup website.

The following can be collected:

  • Dinnerware
  • Small appliances, such as toasters, tea kettles and mixers
  • furniture
  • Home decor, such as vases, frames and lamps
  • Computers and electronic devices
  • Clothes, shoes and fashion accessories
  • Toys and accessories for babies
  • Books and games

The following cannot be collected:

  • mattresses
  • Upholstered furniture such as sofas and armchairs
  • Large appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and dryers
  • Large furniture

All the items collected will be given to associations that work with needy families in the city or resold.

City spokesman Philip Severin said the program helps the city a lot.

“We’re trying to find ways to help students be able to bring their items to be recycled or re-gifted to someone who could really benefit from that item,” Severin said. “We try to reduce the amount of objects that go directly to the landfill or trash. We try to find, by any means, ways to recycle, re-gift, optimize items in Montreal.”
