Beautiful hills of Nilgiri. Ooty is the queen of these mountains. Name now Udhagamandalam. One of the six legislative assemblies under the Nilgiri Lok Sabha. Just as legends are common in the mountains, there are legends here too. The beauty and stories here have been attracting people for years. During the colonial period, foreigners used to go out to look for them. In 1792-1823, the French author Abbé Dubois wrote in his book ‘Hindu manners, customs and rituals’, it was believed that it was difficult to reach the top of this beautiful mountain range, so one glimpse was enough to remove the burden of sin. When British officer John Sullivan set out to explore it in 1819, the workers refused to go, calling it the Land of the Gods. Later on the campaign progressed and so did the development. In 1850 the British officers replaced the natural trees and plants here and planted some eucalyptus species (Nilgiri) and started commercial exploitation.
