An ancient temple (Ancestors Rising) which was submerged for a long time in the Mahanadi River in Odisha’s Nayagarh district has been discovered. The ancient temple is believed to be around 500 years old.
An archaeological survey team from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) recently reported the discovery of an ancient sunken temple on the Mahanadi upstream from Cuttack. The upper part of the sunken temple was found in the middle of the river near Baideshwar in Padmavati village near Nayagarh. The 60-foot underwater temple is estimated to date from the late 15th or early 16th century based on the building style and materials used for construction.
The area where the temple is located is considered ‘Satapatana’. The village of Padmabati was part of Satapathan, an amalgamation of seven villages. This temple was dedicated to Lord Gopinath.
150 years ago the river changed its course due to flooding. Then the whole village was submerged by the river in the 19th century because its flow changed.
Local people of Padmabati village said that around 22 temples were flooded in this area. But only the ‘mastaka’ of the Gopinath Deba temple has been visible for some years. He said that the Gopinath Deba temple will be visible because it is located at a high place.

Deepak Naik, who founded the temple with the help of local heritage enthusiast Rabindra Rana, knew about its existence as the sunken peak can be seen in summer.
