New Delhi (August 26): Voting for the second phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is happening today. Voting is underway for 88 seats in 12 states and one Union Territory in the second phase. In 2019, out of these 88 seats, BJP won 52 seats. The Congress won 18 seats. Apart from Shiv Sena and JD(U) they got four seats each and others got 10 seats. There are 1,198 candidates in the fray in the second phase. Among them are 1,097 male and 100 female candidates. One candidate is transgender.
Voting will take place in these important seats
Rahul Gandhi from Kerala Wayanad and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram are clashing in the second phase. Shashi Tharoor is contesting against Union Minister and BJP candidate Rajiv Chandrasekhar. Hema Malini from Mathura, Bhupesh Baghel from Rajnandgaon, DK Suresh and Tejaswi Surya contested from Bangalore South. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is contesting from the Kota constituency in Rajasthan on a BJP ticket. Pappu Yadav contested as an independent candidate from Purnia in Bihar. BJP candidate from Meerut and Arun Govil, who played the role of Rama in the serial Ramayana, has contested the election.
How was the performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections?
Rahul Gandhi (Wayanadu Constituency):
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad in Kerala. He got 7 lakh votes. His nearest rival PP Sunir of Communist Party of India was second with 2.7 lakh votes.
Hema Malini (Mathura seat)
In 2019, Hema Malini, who contested on a BJP ticket from the Mathura constituency in Uttar Pradesh, got 6.71 lakh votes, while her nearest rival Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Kunwar Narendra Singh got 3.7 lakh votes.
Shashi Tharoor (Thiruvananthapuram Constituency)
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor won 4.16 lakh votes in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram constituency, while BJP’s Kummanam Rajasekaran came second.
Pratap Singh (Mysore Constituency)
BJP’s Pratap Sinha won the election in Mysore, Karnataka by getting 6.9 lakh votes. CH Vijayashankar of the Congress was second.
PC Mohan (Bangalore Head Office)
In Bengaluru Central, BJP’s PC Mohan defeated his nearest rival Rizwan Arshad of Congress by more than six lakh votes in 2029, who got 5.3 lakh votes.
Voting started at 7 am
Voting for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections will begin at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. In Bihar, many polling stations in Banka, Madhepur, Khagaria and Munger constituencies have extended polling hours till 6 pm for the convenience of voters in hot weather.
