Achi news desk-Bhaskar Kharagpur News: Once upon a time, the voice of the demand for Greater Jharkhand used to be quite loud, but due to political circumstances, this voice has become silent in the present time. The resonance of the loud voice has become quite weak as most of the people and organizations running the Jharkhand movement in West Bengal have become directly associated with politics. This time in the Lok Sabha elections, Jharkhand leader and former Ghatsila Member of Parliament Surya Singh Besra is contesting on the Kudmi organization ticket from the Jhargram Lok Sabha seat, but he has also given four districts, namely West Bengal, West Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia districts to Jharkhand state. Many factions of the Jharkhand Party (Naren, Hansda) used to raise their voice and demands in the field of politics, but now this party is struggling to save its existence due to lack of representation in the area. Birbaha Hansda, daughter of former Jharkhand MLA and party leader Chunnibala Hansda, is now a Trinamool leader as well as a state minister, while Chunnibala is currently far from the political arena. During the Lok Sabha elections, due to the fear of losing the vote bank, no political party leader showed the courage to raise the issues of Greater Jharkhand. It should be known that the tribal areas from the neighboring states to Jharkhand are included in Greater Jharkhand. When the movement became fierce in 1989, the central government at the time formed a committee. Greater Jharkhand was once conceived during the movement for a separate state. This vision of Greater Jharkhand included Chhotanagpur and Santal Pargana of erstwhile Bihar as well as dominant tribal areas bordering neighboring states. The districts envisaged to form Greater Jharkhand included Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura of Bengal, Mayurbhanj, Keojhar, Sambalpur and Sundargarh of Odisha and Surguja and Raigarh districts of Chhattisgarh. Gradually, this demand decreased. Today, when 24 years have passed since Jharkhand was separated from Bihar, it is hardly discussed anymore. It should be known that at the beginning of the movement for a separate state, Greater Jharkhand was given more emphasis. When the movement became fierce in 1989, the central government at the time formed a committee. That committee had given its report considering the concept of Greater Jharkhand. However, this was not practically acceptable. The rationale behind this was that technically a state could be divided, but the concept of Greater Jharkhand would face problems by amalgamating several states. This is the reason why the parties and their leaders leading the movement focused on the demand for a separate Jharkhand by including Chhotanagpur and Santal Pargana districts, instead of merging the tribal areas of many states. The first success in this matter came in the form of Jharkhand Autonomous Council. After this, on 15 November 2000, the then Central Government recognized the formation of the state of Jharkhand separately from Bihar. According to Surya Singh Besra, former MLA and President of the Jharkhand People’s Party, who was active during the Jharkhand movement, Greater Jharkhand was conceived during the movement. While people associated with the Jharkhand movement, Dulu Kisku, Jagan Besra, Sapan Hansda, Mangru Mandi say that Jharkhand should be considered as a cultural unit instead of a region. For this, a new outline of the movement should be prepared. As part of the move, economic, rail and rasta roko blockade programs will have to be maintained. Because of this the people associated with the movement will gather again and raise the demand for Greater Jharkhand. Only then will the movement be completely successful and the requirements will also be fulfilled. This needs attention. In the beginning of the movement for a separate state, Greater Jharkhand was given more emphasis.
