Quebec City –

Federal Conservative leader Pierre Poiliber entered the ranks of the Quebec government to add a new candidate to his team.

Éric Lefebvre, whip of the Avner Quebec coalition government, is leaving the province’s ruling party to sit as an independent before joining the Tories ahead of the next federal election.

Poilievre wrote on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, that he was very proud that Lefebvre had joined the conservative team.

On Tuesday, Lefebvre announced he was leaving the CAQ caucus but would continue to represent the riding of Artebesque, northeast of Montreal, as an independent.

The Premier of Quebec, Francois Legault, wrote on Platform X that he asked Lefebvre to withdraw from the faction.

Lefebvre, who ran unsuccessfully for the federal Conservatives in 2008, first won the riding of Artebesque in the 2016 by-election and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.

The next federal election must be held by October 2025.
