With an increase in the number of Quebecers diagnosed with cancer, a number of groups dedicated to the fight against cancer are urging the provincial government to establish an action plan with measurable goals and dedicated funding.

The Quebec Cancer Foundation, the Society for Cancer Research, Lucan and PROCURE unveiled their brief on Friday morning, titled ‘Cancer will not wait: the future agency of Santa Quebec must act!’

According to estimates by the Quebec Cancer Foundation, by 2023, a total of 67,548 Quebecers will be diagnosed with cancer, or 185 new cases per day. This number has been on the rise for several years, and the trend will likely continue, especially in view of the aging of the population, according to a joint press release.

The foundation estimates that last year 22,500 people died of cancer in the province, or 62 deaths a day.

The groups repeat their request from last October for an action plan with a price to fight cancer. On Friday, they offered eight clear recommendations for the Legault government to act as quickly as possible.

First, they call on him to appoint a vice-president in charge of the cancer case at the future agency of Sainte-Québec.
