Neighbors say a disturbing scene is being repeated along Bridlecrest Boulevard Southwest in Calgary. Fences and grass bear a series of scars owners said were left behind by barrel vehicles off 162nd Avenue and into their property.

The latest example happened on Sunday afternoon. Police have still not released the cause of the accident which saw a truck slam into a home on Bridlecrest Boulevard, injuring three people. There was no one inside the house at the time.

“Very lucky,” said neighbor Anna Bazderova. “They live in the basement and have a little girl. He said the girl had a bed by the window.”

On the other side of the home that is hit on Sunday is a day home run by Criselda Yumen. She is now leading a petition, asking the city to add additional safety measures to the intersection, including possibly closing access from 162nd Avenue to Bridlecrest Boulevard.

“The other night I couldn’t sleep because I’m waiting for something to happen again,” said Yumen. “It’s scary. For the safety of my family and the children I look after and my whole community too.”

She said Sunday’s accident was the seventh incident she has recorded in two and a half years, leaving her reluctant to take children out into her yard that borders 162nd Avenue.

“It’s going crazy. It was so quiet before,” Yumen said.

Ward 14 Cllr. Dan McLean said he was aware of the issue. He said speed along 162nd Avenue has been an issue since access was added from Stoney Trail.

“We’ve asked for some mitigation, more law enforcement, some more signage. It is under review as it always is with any serious incident but we are looking at all options,” said McLean.

The City of Calgary said closing access to Bridlecrest Boulevard from 162nd Avenue would be difficult, in part because of the location of the homes.

For now, neighbors like Jose Montes said they are leaving 162nd Avenue off their walkways.

“The corner up there? The corner of death. It’s unbelievable,” said Montes from the intersection. “We avoid that street because there are so many accidents. People don’t respect the speed limit and they go crazy.”

The city said drivers should expect to see speed feedback signs installed in the near future, as well as increased education and enforcement by Calgary police.
