The lure of working in the beautiful Bow Valley is a dream for many people, however, due to the area’s housing problems, it can be difficult to find workers.

A labor retention report estimates Canmore has a shortfall of up to 650 workers.

The Labor Market Recruitment and Retention Strategy identifies housing and the cost of living as its biggest barriers.

According to Reinira Lankhuijzen, a career coach at the Banff and Canmore Job Resource centres, with the transitional and seasonal nature of the area, “there will always be many jobs available.”

“We are seeing a healthy number of job seekers arriving,” Lankhuijzen said. “There are many opportunities in those skilled jobs.”

One reason he points to the lack of workers for culinary management, mid-level to highly skilled hospitality and trade jobs is a lack of housing.

“For those positions, you need a little more experience and you need to be a little more established,” Lankhuijzen said.

“People who work in those jobs may not be interested in working in staff accommodation.”

To help address hundreds of job vacancies in Canmore, there will be a job fair on April 18 at the Malcolm Hotel from 1 to 4 pm

On April 24, a job fair will also be held at Banff Park Lodge from 1 to 4 pm to help address summer openings.
