In an exclusive interview with Network 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke candidly about allegations of misuse by the ED, CBI and intelligence agencies in the country. Here is an edited extract from PM Modi’s interview.

Question: One more question. You have already partially answered this. So, we’ll keep it short. The Opposition and the Congress have been saying that the government is misusing the ED, CBI and intelligence agencies. You said that ED is independent. A paper analyzed that while 25 opposition leaders joined the BJP, cases against 23 of them were struck out or dropped.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi: First, no case was eliminated. Whatever decision the court makes will happen. They are independent. Second, how many such cases involve political leadership? 3 percent only. Big officials are also in prison.

Why were these agencies created? If these organizations are formed for a purpose, do they not serve that purpose? Our courts are supreme anyway. The courts will investigate this. And don’t take the issue of corruption lightly. There should be a discussion about this. There was a time when accusations were baseless, today even after being found guilty, some people wave their hands and take pictures. Do they glorify corruption? This should be criticized.

Corruption should not be seen as the new normal. Otherwise there will be a big loss for the country. It is not about the BJP versus others. I see a gradually increasing atmosphere that says, ‘Oh, it’s all right.’ This is happening. But the poor die. The country should be freed from corruption. This should be the country’s decision. I believe in making the system policy driven.

Earlier Prime Minister used to say that one rupee goes (to the people), but only 15 paise reaches them. Today I say, when one rupee goes, the whole 100 paise gets there – direct profit transfer. How to Improve the system! We have launched the GEM portal, which is a big step towards reducing pollution.

Secondly, the society should be made aware. Also create awareness in society that corruption cannot be tolerated at any level. That atmosphere is created in the country, but political people don’t care. Someone supports those people (the corrupt) because they want to oppose us. He said this is not right.
