New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad in Dubai on December 1 last year. And that meeting paved the way for the release of eight former commanders of the Indian Navy! Finally, Qatar released them. 7 out of 8 returned home on Monday. They claim that this would not have been possible without the intervention of Prime Minister Modi.

It is essentially a major diplomatic victory for India. India actually used an official and back channel for this release. He met the Emir of Qatar during the COP28 summit in Dubai last December 1. Regarding the meeting, the Prime Minister said, “We had a good discussion on the possible bilateral partnership and the welfare of Indians in Qatar.”

Even, the issue of releasing eight former Indian prisoners came up in Prime Minister Modi’s conversation with the Emir of Qatar. However, no official statement was received from any country in this regard.

However, since the meeting, things have progressed in a positive direction. Because, by December 3, the Indian ambassador in Qatar got the consular access of those 8 ex-Indian naval officers. Then on December 28, the court canceled the death sentence of those 8 people. Their release was announced on Monday. Earlier, the Court of First Instance of Qatar had sentenced them to death before the trial at the Court of Appeal began on October 26 last year.

India described the verdict as ‘very painful’. He even promises to explore all legal options in the case. In November last year, the Qatar Court of Appeal accepted the petition filed by eight former Indian Navy officers seeking help from India. The main hearing was then held there on December 7.

India has continued to extend its support for legal and consular access to former Indian naval officers. The Ministry of External Affairs has also ordered to emphasize more on the issue.

Incidentally, in August last year, Indian nationals, all employees of the Al Dahra Agency and former Navy officers were taken into custody on charges of espionage. This has been opposed several times by the Modi government. Along with that, the demand for their release has been repeatedly raised. India welcomed the release of eight Indian citizens. The decision of the Emir of Qatar has also been praised.
