In those days, the mafia don Mukhtar Ansari had so much political influence that he used to roam around in an open jeep during the Mau riots, despite a curfew, in an open jeep and brandishing a machine gun inside it. Referring to that incident in January 2004, the then STF DSP Shailendra Singh said that 20 years ago, the terror and terror of Mukhtar Ansari was at its peak in Mau and the surrounding areas. He told news agency ANI, “20 years ago, during the riots, when curfew was imposed in Mau, Mukhtar Ansari was roaming in an open jeep with his henchmen. He was also wielding a light machine gun from inside it .Then I shot him.with a machine gun, he was arrested and POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act-POTA) was also imposed on him.

According to Shailendra Singh, “Mulayam Singh wanted to save Mukhtar Ansari at any cost. For this he put a lot of pressure on the officers. He also transferred the ID, DIG and STF SP and me to his post within 10 days. They were forced him to resign from the job.”
The former DSP said that he had also discussed this in his resignation at that time. He said, “In the resignation letter, I also wrote the reason for resigning and put it before the people that this is the same government you have elected, but that it protects the mafia and works on their orders.” Singh also said in his resignation that he was only doing his duty by arresting the mafia don.
