He joined the SNP as a special adviser to Jim Mather in 2004 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key figure within the party and a trusted adviser to Ms Sturgeon.
Ms Lloyd was the former First Minister’s chief of staff until 2021, who was then a strategic adviser on longer-term projects, and left the government when the First Minister announced her resignation.
He wrote on social media: “The decision to end the Bute House Agreement has the potential to either make or break Humza Yousaf’s leadership.
“There are a number of tests that he and his team will have to navigate now (apart from the Westminster election).
“Firstly there has not been a clear narrative, a clear purpose or good communication on the government’s agenda during his time as FM. Can he fix that with a reset?
“What policies and spending decisions the SNP Government will commit to now will be a big decision for the cabinet. Do they have a clear agenda to achieve in the areas that voters are looking at? How much influence will a larger gang of Conservative SNP MPs on the backbenches?
“Externally there is a growing sense of inaction at all levels of government. Decisions are being left unmade for too long and opportunities are being missed. Can this move unblock the system and reignite some energy to the machine or does it add to a sense of constant crisis?
“Legislation and budgets? Yousaf will need to make good use of executive powers but he cannot avoid difficult issues forever. Survival will not only depend on the outcome of the Westminster election but on the price he pays to find to a path through parliament when no party has an incentive to help.”
