Traditional Scottish music experiences ‘remarkable’ revival Achi-News

The report, which surveyed 1,000 Scottish adults, examined the nation’s listening habits, finding that traditional Scottish music is not only surviving, but ‘thriving’.

61% of those polled believed the genre was becoming more popular, and 56% of people said they tended to listen to more traditional music in the future.

Meanwhile, 53% of individuals said they had noticed the content of the genre within the media (TV, films, advertisements).

88% also considered it an essential part of the nation’s culture and heritage, while 84% argued that by preserving it, we ensure that future generations have a connection to their roots and cultural identity.

Commenting on the report, Blair Teska, a member of Scottish traditional band Tuath Scot, said: “Scottish Trad Music has experienced a remarkable resurgence among recent audiences, captivated over several generations. It’s not just a trend, it’s a cultural revival.

“As more artists embrace and contribute to the revival of the genre, the cultural legacy embedded in Scottish Trad Music is brought back to life for today’s audiences.

“The music scene is thriving, which is evident not only in the chart success but also in the growing number of festivals and live music events dedicated to the genre. You can really feel the excitement about it in festivals and live performances, with a growing audience showing keen interest.

“There is nothing like reaching out to all parts of Scotland with our music and we are proud to represent the LGBTQ+ community with the richness and diversity of Scottish Trad Music.

This music acts as a time capsule, connecting our past with our present. Every note and melody is a vessel, preserving the stories, traditions and spirit of Scotland’s musical heritage.”

To discover the most popular Scottish traditional music songs, VisitScotland analyzed more than 157,000 tracks included in Scottish traditional music playlists on Spotify, revealing that Dàimh’s ‘Ida’s Jig’ is the most popular traditional music song the highest position, followed by ‘Walking On the Waves’ by Skipinnish and ‘Echo’ by Talisk.
