Tihar DG said that prisoners celebrate every festival in the jails and participate in national programs so that they do not escape from the reality.
In the country’s largest jail, Tihar, located in Delhi, Rs 800 is spent daily on an inmate. According to this, Rs 24 thousand is spent every month. Tihar Director General (Jail) Sanjay Beniwal gave this information on Tuesday (April 16).
In an interview given to news agency PTI, Tihar DG said that around 700 prisoners are working in the hotel industry after coming out of jail. More than 12,00 prisoners are being trained to work. They will come out to work in hospitals.
Sanjay Beniwal said when the prisoners were receiving certificates and offering letters to work outside, I saw a smile and shine in their eyes. By teaching and empowering prisoners’ skills, they become competent.
The prison administration had started the skill development program in 2023 with the help of the Ministry of Urban Development. Under this, infrastructure is provided inside the prisons for training prisoners on trial.
Delhi DG said – No different treatment for Kejriwal in Tihar
Beniwal also mentioned about Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is stuck in Tihar. He said – There is no difference between a fanatic or a common criminal in the prison manual. All prisoners have basic rights and it is my duty to ensure this. No special facility is given to any prisoner. There is no such provision.
In fact, after failing to meet Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar jail, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann had alleged that Arvind Kejriwal is not getting the same facilities in Tihar that even a hardened criminal gets.
On this Beniwal said that there are 20 thousand prisoners in Tihar Jail. Thousands of people come to meet him every day. So far not a single complaint has been received. So I don’t think prisoners are treated differently. Read the full news…

Sanjay Beniwal is a 1989 batch IPS officer. Beniwal took over as Tihar DG from November 2022. Before this he was holding the post of DGP Chandigarh. Before coming to Chandigarh, Sanjay was working as a Special Commissioner in Delhi, equivalent to the post of ADGP.
