GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a new solid waste management system covering 10 wards in phase 1 of its initiative, in December 2024. The system aims to involve both citizens and GMC in effective waste management.

The new system included waste that would be separated into two categories – DRY and WET. Wet waste includes biodegradable materials such as food, leaves, flowers, garden clippings, etc.; While dry waste includes non-biodegradable items such as rubber, paper, metal, plastic, footwear, sanitary napkins and diapers.

However, the separation of the garbage at the source despite many efforts by the GMC was never successful. Pramod Kalita, an ornithologist, shared a video questioning whether waste segregation is actually being done effectively, thereby raising doubts about the effectiveness of the process.

At X, Pramod Kalita, an ornithologist posted a video in which he shared, "Is it segregated waste?

@gmc_guwahati, when will the drama of the scientific waste management process end?

Speaking to GPlus, Nilima Das of Baltula said, "Although we spotted GMC sorting vehicles in and around Guwahati, we did not see workers actually sorting the waste. Enforcing waste segregation rules is difficult, especially when some people continue to throw away waste without facing any consequences."

Rahul Sharma of Chandmari speaking to GPlus said,"We have been waiting for a proper separation of the waste in our area, but it is disappointing to see that no real action is being taken. The presence of separation vehicles does not translate into actual waste sorting on the ground."

Speaking to GPlus, Sunita Devi, another resident of Zoo Road, said, "Despite the promises of the authorities, there is still no waste separation in our settlement. It is frustrating to see the lack of progress in implementing such a crucial aspect of waste management."
