The Supreme Court will now share cause lists and information related to registered cases with lawyers on WhatsApp. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud announced this. A nine-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, headed by the CJI, is hearing a petition asking whether his personal property can be considered an essential resource of society under Article 39(b) of the Constitution.
Promotion of digitalization in the legal system
During the hearing, the Chief Justice said that ‘in the 75th year, the Supreme Court started this campaign, in which WhatsApp will coordinate with the IT services of the Supreme Court to provide access to justice for all.’ The listed cases will be available on WhatsApp only. The list of grounds gives information about the cases to be discussed on a given day.
Attorney General Tushar Mehta expressed happiness over this step of the Supreme Court and said that it is a revolutionary step. The CJI also shared the official WhatsApp number of the Supreme Court and said that no call or message can be sent to this number. While launching the facility, the CJI said that it will bring about a massive change in the way of working and also save paper on a large scale.
