Calgary animal lovers, owners and educators will be heading to Spruce Meadows this weekend for the venue’s first-ever PetFest.

The event is described as a “pet extravaganza” featuring performances, demonstrations, educational displays, charity work – and, of course, a chance to socialize with some animals.

“PetFest was started because we have a love for our community and for animals, so we wanted to bring those two great loves together in one event,” said Krista Poffenroth of Spruce Meadow.

“We’ve really seen how much Calgarians and surrounding areas love animals.”

Although there is a heavy focus on dogs, all kinds of animals are shown during the three-day event.

A reptile exhibit, for example, includes snakes and a turtle, while next door, a sloth lazily makes its way through a tree-lined exhibit.

More than 60 local vendors complement it all.

“I come to pet events because they’re fun,” said Cheddar Dogs salesperson Danielle Schule.

“Everyone here loves their pets very much, so it’s fun to celebrate with them.”

Lisa Wright is a sheepdog trial expert, showing off her skills to audiences ahead of the Canadian Championships this summer in Cypress County.

“It’s not the same as obedience work or trick work, and I think anyone who watches a dog work with a human, to move a different species, thinks it’s really cool,” he said. .

Although it is an animal-focused event, attendees are asked to leave their pets at home.

PetFest runs until Sunday night.
