Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal revealed tips on how he hires the “right” people.

Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com and a judge on Shark Tank, recently emphasized the critical role of leadership in a company’s success on LinkedIn. Acknowledging the importance of innovative products, dedicated teams and a thriving market, Mittal emphasized how poor leadership can ultimately lead to the downfall of a company.

“How do you kill a company? By hiring the wrong leadership! You can have a revolutionary product, a passionate team, and a booming market – all brought to its knees by some bad decisions at the Leadership level,” he wrote.

He further highlighted the challenges founders face in hiring top talent. Despite new recruitment tools and advanced interviewing methods, he questioned their effectiveness.

“Today’s founders and CXOs are bombarded with fancy recruiting tools, psychometric evaluations, and interview techniques that promise the perfect hire. But, most of them are only marginally effective. A smart older person is unlikely to fail an interview, no?” he added.

In a later section of his post, Anupam Mittal shared his strategy for hiring senior managers, highlighting three key principles. His first point emphasized the importance of multiple informal meetings with candidates, preferably in a relaxed environment.

“Everyone is vigilant during office hours and official interviews. The key is to be in a more relaxed environment and the best setting is over a meal – it saves time too. Also, one such meeting will not do. You need 3 in particular and here’s the great part -> If each meeting gives you more confidence, you were hired. If you’re getting more skeptical, move on,” he wrote.

Second, Anupam Mittal proposed a unique method of checking addresses called “Anonymous Ref Checks.” He explained that traditional “named” reference checks are often ineffective. Instead, it uses its own networks to find common contacts and requires a confidential 15-20 minute reference check. Mittal also outlined his “PEARL” reference checking theory, which consists of five elements: P – Reciprocity of Promise, E – Ensure confidentiality, A – Ask targeted questions, R – Retrieve critical insights and re-employment potential L – Learn .

In his final point, Mittal emphasized the importance of hiring “Buildings.” He outlined the key qualities to look for in a leader: “High learning span + Strong ownership + Results orientation + High level of integrity.” Mittal explained that “Buildings” possess these qualities as they take steps to accomplish the task and warned against employing “Preachers and politicians” as they can “create toxicity” in an organization.

He concluded his post with, “Building a winning leadership team takes time, but hire correctly and you’ll cut your workload in half.”

Anupam Mittal’s post garnered a flurry of responses from online users. A reader commented, “He totally agrees with your points, hiring the wrong leaders can kill any company, it’s better to train your existing leaders and promote them to this position.”
