‘Rust’ movie star sentenced to 18 months for fatal shooting by Alec Baldwin – National Achi-News

Film gun inspector sentenced to 18 months in prison in fatal shooting of cinematographer by Alec Baldwin on set of western rustAt the sentencing hearing Monday in a New Mexico state court.

Cinematographer Hannah Gutierrez-Reid was convicted by a jury in March of involuntary manslaughter in the death of photographer Helena Hutchins and has been held for more than a month in the county jail on the outskirts of Santa Fe.

Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of rustpointed a gun at Hutchins when the gun went off, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Baldwin pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Helena Hutchins. He is scheduled to stand trial in July at the Santa Fe District Court.

The sentence against Gutierrez-Reid was handed down by New Mexico Judge Mary Marlow Summer, who is overseeing the proceedings against Baldwin.

Prosecutors accused Gutierrez-Reid of unwittingly bringing live ammunition to a set of rust Where it is expressly prohibited and due to non-compliance with basic gun safety protocols. After a two-week trial, the jury deliberated for about three hours in reaching its verdict.

Gutierrez-Reid teared up Monday as Hutchins’ agent, Craig Mizrahi, spoke of the photographer’s creativity and described her as a rising star in Hollywood. He said it was a chain of events that led to Hutchins’ death and that if the armor had done its job, that chain would have been broken.

Friends and family, including Souza, told the court they were seeking justice for what happened to the photographer. They said she was a “bright beam of light”, and described her as brave, tenacious and compassionate.

Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred read a statement from Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovy, who said her life was split in two and that time did not heal, but only prolonged her pain and suffering. A video of a tearful Solovy, who lives in Ukraine, was also played on the pitch.

“It’s the hardest thing to lose a child. There are no words to describe,” Solovi said in her native language.

Gutierrez-Reed’s defense attorneys asked for a leniency in the sentence – including possible parole that would avoid additional prison time and keep a guilty verdict off the record if certain conditions are met.

Gutierrez-Reid was acquitted on charges of tampering with evidence at trial rust investigation. She also pleaded not guilty to a separate felony charge that she allegedly carried a gun into a Santa Fe bar where firearms are prohibited.

Defense attorneys emphasized Gutierrez-Reed’s relatively young age “and the devastating impact the crime will have on her life later.”

According to them, the 26-year-old will be forever adversely affected by the intense publicity associated with the prosecution at the same time as the A-list actor, and has suffered as a result of anxiety, fear and depression.

Special prosecutor Carrie Morrissey urged the judge to impose the maximum prison sentence and label Gutierrez-Reid a “serious violent offender” to limit her eligibility for a reduced sentence later, describing the defendant’s behavior on the set of rust extraordinarily reckless.

Morrissey told the judge Monday that she reviewed nearly 200 phone calls Gutierrez-Reed made from jail over the past month. According to her, she hopes there will be a moment when the accused will take responsibility for what happened or express sincere remorse.

“That moment never came,” Morrissey said. “Mrs. Gutierrez continues to refuse to accept responsibility for her role in the death of Helena Hutchins.”

Written testimony in favor of clemency included letters from Gutierrez-Reid’s childhood friend and romantic partner Shawn Cridelbo, who said Gutierrez-Reid cries constantly out of remorse over the shooting and that further incarceration would interfere with efforts to care for a relative with cancer. Other friends and former colleagues urged the judge to emphasize rehabilitation over punishment in the sentence.

The pending indictment against Gutierrez-Reid stems from an incident at a downtown Santa Fe bar days before she was hired to work as an armorer at rust. Prosecutors say investigations into the fatal shooting led to the discovery of a selfie video in which Gutierrez-Reid filmed herself carrying a firearm into the bar, while defense attorneys allege vindictive prosecution.
