In a new study of the moon, Indian scientists found evidence of five to eight times more ice than expected. It exists one to three meters below the surface of the moon.

The research was done by scientists associated with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This was done in collaboration with researchers associated with IIT Kanpur, University of Southern California, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. According to the study published in the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, researchers say that getting accurate information about the depth of the ice will help decide the right place to land missions sent to the moon in the future. This information will also help in selecting samples and in fulfilling the dream of humans to settle on the moon. To study the ice, scientists used many instruments, including radar, laser, radiometer and other instruments mounted on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The study revealed that the north polar region of the moon has twice as much ice as the south polar region.

Gas has accumulated in the form of ice below the surface for millions of years.

According to ISRO, this ice is associated with volcanic activities that occurred during the Cambrian period. The gas released from these gradually accumulated in the form of ice below the surface over millions of years. The Cambrian Era was an era in Earth’s geological history that began 541 million years ago and ended 485.4 million years ago. This was the first kalpa of Vishwajivi Aon and Palajivi Maha kalpa. After that came the Ordovician era.

Confirmation of previous research

The results of this study also support an earlier study by ISRO’s Center for Space Applications, where data obtained from Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar and Polarimetric Radar indicated that there are polar craters on the surface of the Moon. Earlier studies revealed the existence of water deep below the surface of the Moon. There is also tentative evidence of surface water ice at the moon’s south pole, but so far there has been no evidence.
