Islamabad: All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran has announced that the Nanbais will observe a shutter strike in Punjab and Islamabad today (Thursday) as they lock horns with the provincial government over the prices of naan and roti, ARY News reported.

Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran president Ajmal Baloch called for the release of dozens of nabs arrested across the province when he announced the strike.

Criticizing the Punjab government, Baloch said it was inappropriate to close the business of one laborer to give relief to another.

He argued that the government would not be able to provide relief to the masses using force.

The trader leader went on to add that the price of naan was kept at Rs 20 when the bag of flour was sold at Rs 10,000. The price was raised to Rs 25 per naan after a Rs 2,000 increase in the price of a bag of flour.

Baloch questioned the government’s latest move, saying nanabis were being asked to sell naan at Rs 16 when a bag of flour had dropped to Rs 10,800.

Calling for negotiations with all stakeholders before taking a decision, he said the issue would be resolved without taking all stakeholders on the prices of naan and roti.

Days earlier, the Muttahida Nanbai Roti Association in Punjab rejected the directives to reduce the price of naan and roti in the district.

Following the Punjab government’s directive to fix the price of roti at Rs 16, Nanbai’s association presented a 96-hour ultimatum, demanding a reduction in flour prices.

The Nanbai Association also threatened to initiate a district-wide lockout strike if its demands were not met.

It is worth mentioning here that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has reduced the price of roti across the province.

Referring to X (formerly Twitter), the first Chief Minister announced that the Punjab government has reduced the prices of roti (a flat bread made in a tandoor) and fixed it at Rs 16.
