Brought up by the deep, these artefacts will be displayed in Glasgow in a major exhibition in October.
Acquired by UK-based White Star Heritage, the superb collection includes what is believed to be the largest known surviving section of the Aft Grand Staircase, multiple pieces of deck chairs, and a sliding wooden door notable, probably from the galley of the famous ship.
All these items were recovered by the SS Minia, a ship sent to rescue the remains of the Titanic which floated to the surface following the tragic disaster. Some of the items had been exhibited in Nova Scotia, Canada before later entering a private collection.
Thankfully, they are in much better condition than many artefacts because they were retrieved from the surface rather than the seabed.
As White Star Heritage Director Tom Rudderham explains: “It’s so exciting to be able to bring these very special relics to the public eye, especially to UK audiences who are likely to have never seen these items before. As most of the remains of the ship lie on the seabed, it is truly a privilege to have such a good glimpse into the past.”
White Star Heritage recently held a Titanic exhibition in Bristol which saw 13,000 visitors in just two weeks.
They are now preparing for a series of larger exhibitions, including at Boxhub Warehouse in Glasgow between 12-27 October.
Thousands of tickets have already been snapped up during the first few weeks that are on sale.
“We’re delighted with the response we’ve had to our exhibitions so far, and the Glasgow communities have been fantastically engaged,” said Tom. “Each city has its own connections to the Titanic and we can’t wait to share some of the amazing Scottish stories we’ve found during our research.”
