An international competition hopes to gather new and interesting ways to recycle the roof of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, which is scheduled to come apart this summer.

Anyone who thinks about design and architecture is invited to offer their “creative and innovative solutions” to breathe new life into the many materials that make up the cover.

“The roof is made up of a variety of materials, including the symbolic cables that support it, its two internal and external membranes and the accessories that support the structure,” state officials at the Olympic Park (SDMVPO).

It’s a global competition “to collect as many environmentally, economically and socially optimal offers as possible”.

Once all submissions are in, Quebecers will be invited to vote for their favorite of the eight finalists pre-selected by a jury of experts.

“This initiative is part of a broader approach to sustainable development and the circular economy,” SDMVPO senior officials point out. “These actions will give the Olympic Stadium a second life for the benefit of the people of Quebec.”

SDMVPO explains that the roof’s external and internal membranes span 42,000 square meters, about the size of 26 hockey rinks.

The cables add up to almost 12 km, almost the entire length of Boulevard Saint Laurent, and the roof consists of 434 steel connectors that secure the cables.

The dismantling of the roof of the Olympic stadium is planned for the summer of 2024.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the competition or registering their ideas can click here.

The application deadline is May 31, 2024, and applicants have until June 11, 2024 to submit their ideas.

Prizes ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 can be awarded to winners.
