It wasn’t the kind of excitement James Hardy was expecting when he set off for a day of snowboarding at Llyn Louise: an encounter with a grizzly bear.

Hardy says it was around 3 pm on Wednesday (April 23, 2024), when he came across the bear alongside a run called Cameron’s Way.

A spokesperson for the ski hill confirms that the bear was first seen by some members of staff a few hours earlier around 1 pm on the ski out and again a little later on a run called Pine Cone Way.

Dan Markham says the ski hill has closed access to runs and ski lifts in the area, and is monitoring the situation closely to help keep guests and the bear apart.

Video shot by Hardy shows the bear as it appears to later emerge from the woods alongside Cameron’s Way.

Hardy said, “I didn’t know it was a grizzly, and it was too late to turn around when he saw us, so I had a friend ride by as quickly as possible. Definitely one of the scariest I’ve ever been.”

Markham says the ski hill “was able to control the lifts and close the terrain to keep guests and the bear separate and as soon as it was off the leasehold we resumed normal operations.”

It says “no further reports have been seen.” He added, “Parks Canada was informed but no further action was taken.”
