Johannesburg (Sports Desk) Former South African umpire Maurice Erasmus has admitted the mistake of fellow umpire Kumar Dharmasena that led England to win the first ODI World Cup title in 2019.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Erasmus said he became aware of the problem a day after the memorable game at Lord’s.

Under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan, England won the 50-over World Cup trophy for the first time by defeating New Zealand in the final. It was a thrilling contest, however many fans felt the umpire did the Black Caps no justice in the final over of the game when a two-way throw hit Ben Stokes’ bat and was deflected to the boundary.

Erasmus and Dharmasena declared it a six-run (two runs + four overs), much to the surprise of many fans in the stadium and around the world. Although the game went to the extreme, this decision gave the hosts the opportunity to reduce the margin and take the game to the last ball.

“The next morning I opened the door to my hotel room on my way to breakfast and Kumar opened his door at the same time and said, ‘Did you see we made a huge mistake?’ Then I found out about it. But that moment on the field they just said six, you know, talking to each other, ‘six, six, it’s six’ not realizing that they didn’t cross, it wasn’t picked up. Erasmus told an English newspaper.

Former referee Simon Toffle also described this decision as a ‘mistake’.

“It’s an obvious mistake … Simon Toffle told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2019 it was an error of judgement. He said England should have given five runs instead of six.

He said that the error of judgment was made when the fielder bowled the ball. An over throw begins when the fielder releases the ball. This is the process. He said it turned upside down immediately after the throw.
